In this year 428 beaches of Greece were awarded with so-called "blue flags" of quality. This means that they are not only impeccably clean and serviced, but also have berthing for yachts. As the Greece nature preservation company reports, Hellas takes second place among the 49 countries that participate in this beach rating.
Most clean beaches has the peninsula Halkidiki on the north of the country and the Dodekanes Archipelago in the Aegean Sea. Among the isles the best are Crete, Kerkifa (Korfu), Lesbos, Rhodos and Kefalinia.
The blue flags are being given since 1987. In the whole world in 2579 beaches and 629 piers for yachts were awarded in this year. The main criteria are cleanness, the organisation of the relaxation, the accessibility of the information to the visitors, the security of the swimmers and the visitors, protection of the environment on the shore and in the surrounding locations. |
