According to the tradition, in the Salvatorkeller beerhouse in Nockenberg Hill of Munich, the first barrel of beer will be opened. From this moment begins the Starkbierzeit (time of strong beer) holiday which is followed by the carnival. It begins in March and lasts for 3 months, Famous statesmen and public people come to this ceremony. And according to the tradition, they are made fun of during the opening.
In the previous times the strong beer (Starkbier), which contains significantly more alcohol that any normal beer, has helped the monks to keep the fast. Starkbier is brewed in Paulaner, Augustiner, Hacker and Lowenbrau breweries. |
