A glacial lake in Chile's southern Andes has disappeared - and scientists want to know why. Where the lake had been in March safe and sound, a dry crater 30-meters deep and several large pieces of ice can only be found now.
In specialist's opinion, water may have disappeared potentially through cracks in the lake bottom. The problem is that there have been no earthquakes reported in the area recently (which are the main source of the cracks normally).
In view of the fact that the district of Chile where the lake had been situated is one of the most rainy places in the world, the lake of the size of 10 soccer pitches couldn't have dried by itself either.
The remarkable fact is that the water had appeared all of sudden just like it disappeared. It was located for the first time 30 years ago. |
