From 18th till 20th of February a traditional carnival takes place in the Belgian Binche. Every year in this ancient city there are ten times more tourists than locals. On the first day of the carnival, the "Fat Sunday", lots of massive men dressed as women and women bearing beards and mustaches are walking through the city.
On Monday various folklore concerts are taking place. And the main day of the carnival is the "Fat Tuesday". On this day the Gilles appear on the streets - similar humpbacks wearing glasses and gaudy clothes. These are the symbol of the Belgian carnival. A Gille can become only those who inherited this honorary duty. The parade of the GIlles with huge feathers on their hats is the main cernival event. They throw oranges into the crowd and according to the popular belief, the one who catches an orange, will have a lucky year. |
