Mexicans celebrate the Day of the Dead

1 Nov. 2007

The tradition has arisen among Aboriginals of the country - Indians Maya and Aztec. This day every year they brought gifts to the goddess Mictecacihuatl, called Lady of the Dead. Nowadays Mexicans visit the tombs of their relatives and decorate their houses. According to the popular belief, the souls of the dead visit their native places on the 1st of November.

The colourful popular revels with and ritual open-air dances are organized in the big cities on the Day of the Dead (Día de los Fieles Difuntos). Hundreds of tourists gather from all over the world to look at this action and to taste the special festive sweets - a sugar skull and the so-called "bread of the dead" - the sweet egg baked goods.
