The owners of French bars have held a mass protest demonstration associated with smoking ban in public places. 10 thousand people took part in the demonstration in total. The smoking ban has been put active from the 1st of February, but bars, casinos, hotels and restaurants were provided with a delay for 11 months. So the privilege will be canceled from the 1st of January, year 2008.
First cigarette with a cup of coffee at a bar counter in the morning - is a good tradition for many French smokers and an important source of income for bars. However, as judged to authorities' position, barmen's march to the National Assembly building will not be able to affect the decision.
"The governmental decree-law will be carried out without any delay or an indulgence since it has been expected by French for a long time", - declared governmental official of the country. |
