Snow tires are required to enter Finland and other northern countries

29 Nov. 2007

Tourists who want to visit Finland with their cars should remember that in this country using snow tires is obligatory from the beginning of December till the end of February. Meanwhile, snow tires may be used from the beginning of November till the 31st of March, at your convenience. The use during other seasons is allowed only when it depends on special weather conditions.

The height of tread pattern in summer tires of an auto has to be not less than 1.6mm. Speaking about winter tires, all countries mean a winter or year-round tire with tread depth not less than 3mm. Driving on tires with open cord is disallowed. The joint use of snow tires and usual tires is forbidden.

Snow tires are required for the cars entering Sweden and Baltic countries (Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia) from the 1st of December. In Norway snow tires are required from the 1st of October. Meanwhile, when a tire is not just winter but also spiked, you will have to pay 30 Norwegian krone (about $5) for an additional due to enter into the centre of Oslo or Tróndheim

Tourists should remember that attention is needed while driving a car along ice-covered roads.
