On 15 November the European Parliament approved the joining of nine new countries of the European Union to the Schengen visa-free area. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Hungary, Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Slovenia and Malta shall enter the Schengen area starting with 21 December this year. Starting with this date passport control shall be eliminated in the inner Schengen land and sea crossing points. However, it shall remain in airports up to 29 March, 2008 inclusive.
However, Schengen regulations shall also be applied to journeys through airports. It means free border crossing with a Schengen (but not national) visa. The tourists have to remember: documents shall be checked but not stamped on the inner borders till the end of March. |
