Santa Claus will become a rare guest in Cyprus on present winter holidays. The island's officials "sacrificed" him to scaled advertising campaign for putting Euro into circulation. Posters, on which Europe, Phoenician King Agenor's daughter, who, according to the legend, was stolen by Zeus, having appeared before her as a white ox, appeared In the streets of Cyprus' cities. It is she who plays the role of Santa Claus this year and makes presents to children.
"The main idea of present Christmas is to show that our ties with Europe are rooted in Grecian mythology, when Zeus had stolen a beautiful girl called Europe", - is explained at the Ministry of Finance. The main task is to persuade Cypriots that the common European currency will do no harm to the island's economy and will not worsen the life of ordinary citizens.
All the calculations in Cyprus will be made in Euro from 1 January 2008. The experts suppose that the transfer of the country to European currency will lead to a rise in prices for all the goods and services, as it was in many other countries. |
