Entertainment of local inhabitants and tourists in Thailand has become a matter of life and death for elephants and their owners. In 1989 deforestation was forbidden in this country and it caused "unemployment" among elephants, that earlier worked at tree felling. To keep an elephant is not cheap but tourism helps with this. Some elephants work as taxi. Smarter elephants have become artists and entertain people.
Now to organize a show with the participation of elephants that draw pictures, play polo or turn hoops is virtually a single source of income for owners of more than a thousand of domesticated animals. |
