A well-known carnival is taking place in Venice

26 Jan. 2008

The traditional carnival began in Venice on Friday. During 10 days squares, streets, canals and bridges of the town will resemble an enormous stage on which one of the most exciting performances in the world will be shown.

This time the major theme of the carnival is "Six Senses" among which besides eyesight, hearing, taste, sense of smell and sense of touch, also the mind was included. This year the special appeal of the event will be "Carnival in Darkness", the principal heroes of which will become blind people. Usually the festival begins with the flight of an "angel" who will come down to the crowd from the famous 100-metres-high Venetian bell tower on the central square San Marco This year by the plan of one of the organizers of the carnival Marko Balic the rap musician Coolio will play the role of the "angel". In other respects the carnival will be traditional: dancing parties, festivals, musical shows will take place all over Venice and at the end of the carnival a man of straw symbolizing winter will be burned. Every year the festival attracts about one million tourists. The holiday will last 10 days and will finish on the 5th of February.
