Guatemala: tourism takes the third place

Guatemala has become one of the most popular countries of Latin America. According to the official sources, in 2007 the tourist industry in Guatemala had a record increase of the currency earnings for 18.4 %. According to the Institute of Tourism of Guatemala (INGUAT) last year 1 627 522 tourists from different countries visited the country, it surpassed the achievement for 2006 when the number of visitors was 1 502 069 people. Tourism brought a profit for the national treasury in amount of 1 billion 199 million dollars in comparison with the last year's income of 1 billion 12 million dollars. INGUAT reports that beginning from 2003 the industry has been permanently developing. This year 880 223 tourists from another countries visited Guatemala and spent 599 million dollars. According to the source, in 2004 this Central American country was visited by 1 181 526 people who spent 770 million dollars, but in 2005 this number went up to 1 315 646 people who spent 868 million dollars. In 2007 tourism in Guatemala will be the third of the most profitable sources of income.
