13% of Americans won't take rooms at 13th floor

20 Mar. 2007

According to the results of survey, performed recently by Gallup, 13% of Americans are afraid of living on the 13-th floor of a hotel. The most supertitious visitorsr are the elder women and those who rarely stays in hotels.

The fobia againts the digit 13 is seriously impacting the revenues of the hotels. That is the reason why many of the American hotels have decided not to have the 13th floor. In such hotels there ist 14th floor right after the 12th. For example - almost all Las Vegas hotels are built right this way.

An interesting fact is that for the question - what would you do if you would anyways get a room at the 13th floor - 75% of the superstitious respondents said that they would insist on having a different floor and 22% would stay. And only 9% of both of these would be satisfied, if there would be no other rooms.
