The administration of one of the largest museums of fine arts in Cologne "Wallraf-Richartz" declared that the canvas of the impressionist Claude Monet "On the Banks of the Seine by Port Villez" was a skillful fake. This conclusion was drawn by the experts of the restoration department of the museum after an X-ray photography of the canvas.
The museum examined all the paintings on the threshold of the exhibition of impressionists. During the examination of Monet's canvas some suspicious details were observed. Particularly, it was painted over the sketch accomplished absolutely differently from the style of Monet. Besides that, experts detected that it was skillfully made look old with the help of a colorless substance.
The collaborators of the museum admitted the exposure philosophically. According to a representative of Wallraf-Richartz, in spite of the exposure of the fake, the canvas, however, will be presented on the exhibition in order to demonstrate the specialists' achievements. Besides this canvas, there are 5 paintings of Monet the originality of which was proven. |
