The authorities of Lithuania are thinking seriously about changing the English variant of writing the name of the country in order to make its pronunciation easier.
These recommendations were suggested by a special commission with the prime-minister at the head in the context of the marketing conception aimed at the improvement of Lithuanian image both in Europe and in the world. It must contribute to the attraction of foreign investments to the economy of Lithuania and to the development of the tourist industry.
According to the commission, the English transcription for the word "Lithuania" is difficult to pronounce and remember for those people whose native language is not English. The Lithuanians call their country not Lithuania but Lietuva.
However, no concrete variants of a new name have been suggested yet, and the proposal to change the name is only being examined now, the final decision still hasn't been made. |
