The European Union has approved the entrance of Switzerland into the Schengen area

According to the official representative of the European Committee, Swiss confederacy probably will be able to enter the Schengen area already on the 1st of November, 2008. In near future the technical experts from the European Committee will visit the country and the terms of the entrance of Switzerland into the United European Visa-free Area will depend on their conclusion.

The entrance into the Schengen area provides abolition of the frontier control and joining the united police database of Schengen.

The first block of bilateral agreements between Switzerland and the European Union was signed in 1999. The dwellers of Switzerland approved the Schengen agreement for joining the country in a national referendum in June, 2005.
