The protest against the forthcoming closing of the red quarter in Amsterdam

7 Feb. 2008

Several hundreds of people held a demonstration against the city authorities' plans to change radically the appearance of the well-known "red quarter".

Owners of brothels and of coffee-shops (the cafes in which marijuana is sold), prostitutes, local dwellers and those who sympathize them participated in the event.

The demonstration began near the sex-theatre "Casa Rosso" where the singer Nick Harren sang a song about the "red quarter". Then the participants of the manifestation walked along the canals and the side streets where red lams shine upon the windows with prostitutes, then they came to the central square of the Netherlands' capital - Dam. They delivered a speech for the tradition of the "red quarter" and then there was a silence minute in support.

The participants of the demonstration told that they support the intention of the municipality to struggle with crime in the quarter but they think the city authorities' plans go too far. Besides that, they complained that the authorities insufficiently inform them about their plans.
