Near the southern coast of Cyprus the archaeologists have found a hull of an ancient ship, which 2300 years ago was carrying the amphorae with wine from Greece back to the island. As it now became known, the valuable discovery buried under the layer of silt and sand is situated two kilometers far from the Cyprian shore, at a depth of 44 meters.
The ship perfectly withstood the ravages of time and dates back to the late period of antiquity. The researchers managed to get down to the ship in the November of the year 2007 and to make a set of photos, where one can clearly see the cargo, consisting of amphorae and supplies. Considering the form of the amphorae, it can be defined that they were mostly used to carry wine from Greek islands through the Mediterranean.
The underwater diggings and the lifting of the ancient ship will start on the southern coast of Cyprus in July, year 2008. |
