150 gigantic turtles at the age of 5-8 years, which were grown up in a closed nursery, have been let free on the Galapagos Islands. Now these unique animals will live in the natural conditions, in a popular among tourists district Muro de las Lagrimas. Keeping turtles in nurseries from the birth till a certain age has become one of the methods to increase the population of this species of reptiles.
The Archipelago de Colon or the Galapagos Islands in 1978 was added by UNESCO to the Universal List of Cultural and Nature Heritage. Earlier a serious damage to the unique flora and fauna of the Galapagos Islands was caused by unorganized tourists, poachers and turtle hunters. For the creation of the normal ecological conditions the Government of Ecuador decided to take a strict control of the visitation of this place by all the people including tourists. |
