The Eiffel Tower is the most popular place of interest in the world. Its new record in 2007 was 6.893.000 visitors (it is 78.000 more than last year).
Tour groups are the increasing category of tourists which is one fifth of the total amount of visitors. One third of the visitors came at night. The income from the tower increased for 4.7% and was 51 million euro.
The tower, designed by the engineer Gustave Eiffel, was built in 1889 for the exhibition in Paris. Initially many Parisians didn't like it and thought it was ugly and worsened the appearance of their city.
It was planned to dismantle the tower in 20 years. But the authorities decided to use it as a radio tower. Only after some years it became an attraction of the city. |
