On Thursday, not far away from Pittsburgh (the state of Pennsylvania), two passenger airliners miraculously avoided a collision in the air, when a ground controller directed one plane against the other one.
The representatives of the Federal Aircraft Direction of the USA reported to the press service, that the tragedy was avoided thanks to the response of the warning system which notified the coming head-on collision and thanks to the fast reaction of pilots. One airplane with 57 passengers on board sank down, and the pilot of the other plane coming from the opposite direction managed to ascend quickly. As a result they managed to avoid a collision being at the distance of just 130 meters one from another.
The representative of the National Service of the Aircraft Controllers, Melissa Ott, told that the ground controller who committed the mistake, probably, was a probationer and worked in the service not more than a year. As she said, for 18 years of her work, she has never observed such a situation when airlines "parted" in such a narrow air corridor. |
