According to the recent sociological poll among the guests of the Portuguese capital, held last summer, the oceanarium having the status of the museum became the most visited place in Lisbon. The public, coming every day to the oceanarium consists mainly from the Portuguese themselves. However, there are also a lot of Spanish, Brazilians, Italians and British. Recently, the 12-million visitor of the biggest in Europe aquarium was awarded with a trip to the "Expo Zaragoza 2008" exhibition.
The Lisbon Oceanarium consists of a central basin with the volume of about five thousand cubic meters of seawater and four natural habitats, representing four oceans: Pacific, Arctic, Antarctic and Atlantic. There are more than 8 thousands of sea animals and 500 kinds of plants kept in the oceanarium.
The Lisbon oceanarium is considered to be one of the best aquariums on the global scale. It was distinguished by EMAS-2005 award, the honorary 'Valmor' award (1998), and Chiara'98 Per le Scienze award (1998). |
