Romania will have to close 18 of 32 zoological gardens, including the one in Bucharest. During the latest months an elephant, a tiger and a lion died in the capital Baneasa Zoo because of the personnel's carelessness. A number of such incidents took place in other country's institutions, after which it was decided to stop their activity.
The European Union set up severe requirements for the conditions of keeping animals in zoological parks. These rules concern the space allotted for animals, hygienic regulations and food ration. "The majority of Romanian zoological gardens resembles prisons and can't fulfill the conditions set up by the EU", told the Minister of the Environmental Protection, Attila Corodi. According to his information, about 10 thousand animals will be transported to other places, but the other 14 zoological gardens will be modernized. The government will allot about 33 million euro for these measures. |
