During the yearly event that took place in September 2007, the activists of the social organization Ocean Conservancy have collected about 3 thousands tons of garbage from the shores around the world. 378 thousands of volunteers have cleared from garbage 33 thousands kilometers of the coastal line. The event took place in 76 countries of the world and in 45 USA states.
The shores cleaning event is organized by the Ocean Conservancy since 1986. In 2008 it is planned for the 20-th of September. In the past year 2,3 million cigarette stubs, 588 thousands of plastic bags, 1,7 million food packages and 1,2 million of bottles and cans have been cleaned from the world beaches. At the same time the activists have released 81 birds, 63 fishes, 49 invertebrates 30 sea mammals and 11 reptiles stuck in the garbage.
During the events it has been revealed that in USA for each mile of the coast there are in average 390 pounds of garbage, in Canada 74 pounds, in Mexico 157 pounds, in China 65 pounds and in New Zealand 46 pounds. |
