The erupting Llaima volcano in Chile became the new attraction

16 Feb. 2008

Till the recent time the small village Cherchenco in the South of Chile was of no interest to the tourists - as well as for Chileans and for the foreigners that came to have a rest to these places. The calm and usual life of the citizens of Cherchenco has been changed in this year by the LLaima volcano, located in 18 kilometers from the town. This place offers the most beautiful view to the erupting volcano and about 500 tourists come there daily.

Llaima, which height is about 3,2 thousand meters - has unexpectedly began to erupt after 14 years of silence in the first day of the new year. On the first of January, the volcano that is known as the most active in South America - made the local citizens and guests "happy" with a firework and lava stream. The local authorities had to evacuate several hundreds of the local inhabitants and tourists from the national nature park Conguilio located at the feet of Llaima. Since that time the volcano activity does not stop. The periodical fireworks are repeated and in the evening hours from the observation decks in Cherchenco is clearly seen the file lava river with the length of 2,5 kilometers, running down the volcano slope.
