Earthquake with the magnitude of 6,2 became strongest in the Norway history

21 Feb. 2008

In the night from Wednesday to Thursday in the north of Norway there was the strongest earthquake in the history of this country.

The epicenter of the quake was located in 140 kilometers to the south-east from the Longyearbyen - the administrative center of the Svalbald archipelago and in 10 kilometers under the sea level. It has been recorded by the national seismic institute NORSAR and many other seismologic stations around the world.

The first quake has been registered at 3:46 in the morning local time. According to the citizens, many houses were trembling at the island.

As the Norway seismologists report, there were no victims and demolitions because Svalbald is a low populated territory: the amount of local citizens is not more than 2,5 thousands.
