Slovakia will switch to euro currency next year

7 May. 2008

The European Commission has supported Slovakia to enter the zone of the united euro currency. This will happen on the 1-st of January 2009.

As the representatives of the European Committee in Brussels and the European Central Bank in Frankfurt have stated on Wednesday, Bratislava is conform to all the criteria of the Maastricht Agreement.

The entrance of Slovakia to the "eurozone" should also be approved by the other members of EU. The country with five million citizens has a significant external debt. Another problem is high inflation.
