Artificial reef-cemetery appeared at the Florida coast

12 May. 2008

At the Atlantic coast of the Florida at the depth of 14 meters there is a unique artificial reef that is actually... a modern cemetery. There are gates, benches, memorial plates and paths. Those who lives their lives in the sea can be buried here.

The Neptune Memorial Reef cemetery appeared last year in autumn after the initiative of several divers. There has been a special technology developed for the burials in the sea bottom that prevents the remains from being washed out and does not harm the ecology and even helps it, creating an environment for the fishes and corals. Besides, the artificial reef is a part of the program of protection of the Florida coast from the hurricanes.

Each burial can have it's own special design, so this reef will look especially extraordinary. The local authorities are sure that the Neptune Memorial Reef will become a local touristic sight.

The most simple burial costs here $995 and the installation of a monument on the "underwater grave" will cost more. The Neptune Memorial Reef is locates in the Key Biscayne district.
