One of the most secret coast guard objectives of Stockholm from the cold war times has been opened for visits. From the 22-th of June till 13-th of August the tourists can visit the Arholm battery, located on one of the islands of the Northern part of the Stockholm archipelago.
The coastal fortification system that got the name "Arholm battery" has been built in 1968. It consists of a complex of the underground secret passages, a bunker for 200 soldiers, cannons masked as rocks and also radars and other equipment. On the top of the island there is a Boforce cannon that has the reach of 25 kilometers and fires 35 shots per minute.
In January of this year the Department of Defense has officially passed the complex to the government. There are 5-6 excursions around the battery daily that start from Norrtalje city port to the north from Stockholm. The group consists of maximum 15 persons because of the narrow underground passages. |
