Whales near the Australian shores attract tourists

Humpback whales came close to the Western Australia coast. Each year the tourists from all over the world come to this part of the continent for several days to watch the whales playing near the coast. According to the estimates of the experts, such a sightseeing brings $45 million to the local authorities. This year the tourists were especially lucky - according to the witnesses, there has never been so many giant mammals here during the last 15 years.

Several dozens of years ago there were only a couple of thousands of humpback whales in the world. Their population became to increase after the international restriction for hunting these animals has been introduced in the 60s.

According to the members of the SPLASH project that have been intensively watching the humpback whales during three years, only in the northern part of the Pacific ocean their populations makes up now from ten to twenty five thousands specimen.

According to the conclusions of the scientists, in the Australian waters that are a kind of a meeting point for the sea giants of the northern and southern hemispheres, there are about five thousands of humpback whales - the species that has been recently disappearing.
