Alcatraz tourists will be fed in the jail canteen

15 Jun. 2008

The USA national parks department that controls also the Alcatraz, plans to create a comfortable hotel at the island.

According to the representative of the department, Rich Weideman, the island is very popular among the tourists that also complain that not the whole territory of the former jail is open for exploring. Weideman thinks that the construction can significantly enhance the opportunities for the island visitors.

The building for the jail guard is planned to be refurbished into a hotel. Besides, according to the 20 years plan of the Alcatraz infrastructure development, there will be a cafe built, based on the jail canteen and also there will be boat excursions round the island.

The Alcatraz jail existed for about 30 years at the island and has been closed in 1963. The most dangerous American criminals have been put there, for example the famous gangster Al Capone.

In 1971 Alcatraz has got the status of the national historical monument and in 1973 it has been opened for the tourists. Nowadays, according to the agency, it is being visited by one and half million people yearly.
