First time for the last hundred years the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina began to melt in winter (it is a cold time of the year in the southern hemisphere now). Several dozens meters large pieces break away from the top of the huge iceberg and crash into the lake.
Thousands of tourists come to watch the exciting show to the national park Los Glaciares and the local television channels have even established live broadcasts to demonstrated the natural phenomenon to the TV audience. However, the scientists suppose that the reason of the anomaly is not the global warming. They think that Perito Moreno is crashing because of the increased water pressure, what will lead to it's full extinction in future. Earlier the glacier has been losing pieces only during the summer and it could regenerate in winter.
The glacier called after the name of it's discoverer, is 60 meters tall, 5 kilometers wide and about 170 meters deep. This natural wonder has been listed as UNESCO world heritage. It's age is about 30 thousands years. |
