A new coral reef has been discovered in Brazil that is probably the largest one in the Atlantic.
According to the experts of the Conservation International, the new reef is two times larger than the Abrolhos reef system near the eastern coast of Brazil that is so popular among the divers.
Unidentified sea fauna species have been found in the new part of the reef. The scientists suppose that most of the new species can be found only here because of the unique reef location and ecosystem.
The specialists have created a 3-D map of the sea bottom and have determined that the unknown reef spreads about 150 kilometers long into the Atlantic ocean. The reef begins in 15 kilometers from the shore and ends at the 200 km. distance. The scanning data shows that the height of the reef in various places makes from 20 till 90 meters.
The new reef can contain lots of living organisms because of it's depth and inaccessibility. According to the preliminary data, their amount can be here about 30 times more than in the famous part of the Abrolhos reef, but the most part of the sea dwellers is absolutely unprotected from the menaces that are caused by the human activity. |
