Venice became the first Italian city, where beggars are officially prohibited. The city authorities had to introduce such measures as an attempt to eliminate the usage of children in this criminal business.
The police patrols will be enforced in the city and this will be especially seen at the city sights and other territories with large touristic traffic. The violators of the law will be fined with the amount from 25 to 50 euro. Besides, the policemen will confiscate the cash of the beggars.
Augusto Salvadori, the head of the city council department claims that the whole population of Venice supports this. The beggars irritate the citizens and tourists, damages the image of Venice and makes city walks less pleasant.
Salvadori underscores that these measures will not consider the real poor citizens in any way that receive help from the city. |
